About the Series

In the current environment, education abroad staff and administrators often find themselves struggling to capture resources in institutional environments that too often appear to pit student success, equity and engagement offices against each other. This can happen despite the fact that these offices often have shared interests. This series invites participants to look for opportunities for coalition building across offices and use shared evidence to make the local case for education abroad as part of larger institutional narratives & priorities (e.g., student engagement & success, quality of instruction, inclusive climate & belonging, sustainability, work readiness, etc.). 

Connecting with campus networks or joining forces with other student success and engagement colleagues at your institution can be a fruitful, cost-effective strategy for EA offices of varying sizes to:  

• demonstrate the relevance and value of EA programs to institutional outcomes and  
• provide evidence to argue for sustained investment in education abroad and related global learning efforts to senior administrators and external stakeholders.

Presenters will highlight a dataset, instrument and/or entity that institutions and EA offices may be able to use to advance holistic, evidence-based story telling. Each session will include illustrations and/or case examples as well as time for Q&A.

Description: ​Global learning is a key outcome for today’s postsecondary learning. Yet, how do you know that the opportunities offered –study abroad, international internships, research, volunteer opportunities, and global dimensions in the curriculum and co-curriculum – are making the intended difference?

The assessment of global experiences and outcomes helps address accountability demands and can enrich offerings. This session introduces a basic assessment approach, including results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Global Learning Topical Module as a broad frame, features insights from expert practitioners about what to measure, and then invites education abroad professionals to exchange ideas about how they assess global learning.  Come ready to share your ideas, plans and questions!

Jillian Kinzie, Ph.D. is Associate Director of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at the Center for Postsecondary Research, Indiana University. She conducts research and leads project activities on the use of student engagement data to improve educational quality and issues of teaching and learning and serves as senior scholar with the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA). She currently leads a Strada Foundation funded assessment of college students’ career and workforce preparation. She is co-author of Radical Reimagining for Student Success in Higher Education (2023), Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices: Research and Models for Achieving Equity, Fidelity, Impact, and Scale (2022), Assessment in Student Affairs (2016), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education (2015) and Student Success in College (2010), and is a peer reviewer for accreditors and consults with colleges and universities about assessment, effective educational practice, inclusive excellence, high-impact practices, and support for student success.

Title: Relevance & Reciprocity in Global Learning Spaces: Leveraging the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement

Description:
Education abroad (EA) and community engagement (CE) offices have shared interests in their concerns for student learning and success, partnerships, and reciprocity. In practice, these shared interests don’t necessarily result in increased collaboration on the ground. The result is missed opportunities to co-identify promising practices to achieve common goals and to respond to shared challenges, particularly in the realm of teaching, learning and working in and with local and global communities to improve our shared futures.   

As education abroad and global offices look to make the case for their broader impacts to senior administrators and to a range of stakeholders at home and abroad, one tool that often isn’t leveraged is the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. This classification process invites campuses to complete a self-study of the full scope of their community engagement.  Intercultural, global learning and study abroad are all captured within this process making it a rich opportunity to not only contribute to institutional priorities but also critically reflect with others to more intentionally link local and global student learning and engagement opportunities and live into our commitments to reciprocity and respect for others. 

In this session, presenters introduce the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, addressing how education abroad, global and civic engagement offices can work together to: 

• Leverage the application process to amplify local and global community engagement initiatives and their outcomes; 
• Make visible to stakeholders on and off campus the benefits of connecting civic engagement, education abroad and study away programs;
• ​Develop and/or extend relationships to address gaps, building off of each other’s strengths and assets to improve practice and scaffolding of civic and global engagement partnerships across our institutions. 

As part of the conversation, colleagues from Bard College will join the conversation to share their evolving efforts to bridge civic and global engagement and how they have utilized the Elective Classification process as a tool in their joint work.

As EA offices look to demonstrate the value of education abroad to a range of stakeholders, the quest to find affordable, relevant and scalable data sources abounds. One source that may be in use at your institution already, but which you may never have heard of is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In 2023, nearly 1,700 bachelor’s-granting colleges and universities in the United States and Canada have participated in NSSE to measure the extent to which students engage in effective educational practices that are empirically linked with learning, personal development, and other desired outcomes such as persistence, satisfaction, and graduation. NSSE data are for institutional improvement and research. Questions relevant to education abroad and global learning are part of NSSE. In this session, join Dr. Jillian Kinzie for an introduction to NSSE and how education abroad staff and administrators can: a) leverage NSSE to cultivate buy-in for education abroad and b) work collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to address shared questions facing campuses related to student success and well-being.
