The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Planning Toolkit provides colleagues with tools and guidance to help ensure your equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts are embedded within the structure of your office meet the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad.  

Included are tools and resources designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of any institution or organization, addressing all aspects and phases of education abroad and all stakeholders, from learners to local communities to faculty, staff, and administrators. 

​Please note: The Forum on Education Abroad is an international organization based in the U.S. and the Toolkit is presented through a U.S. lens. We propose in it one approach that may be helpful to administrators and faculty at higher education institutions and international education organizations based in the U.S. and around the world. Colleagues interested in learning about U.S. perspectives on these topics may find it useful.

We acknowledge that our approach is not universal and may require reflection and refinement from international colleagues before being applied in their local contexts. ​

1. Facilitation Guide 

This Guide (the document you are reading) was developed to support the person(s) leading the EDI Action Planning process for your education abroad office, institution, or organization. You will find in it guidance on how to facilitate discussions and use the other Toolkit resources effectively to develop and implement your EDI Action Plan.  ​

2. Framing the Conversations Slide Deck 
 
Framing the Conversations Slide Deck is a PowerPoint presentation that you can use to facilitate the first meeting of the EDI Action Planning Team. It will guide you through the process of establishing norms of engagement for EDI work, developing a shared understanding of terminology, and determining shared goals and priorities.

3. How to Develop an EDI Statement 

This resource walks you through the process of developing an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Statement for your office, institution, or organization.​

4. Guidance on Using Data to Take Action on EDI 

How can you tell whether your EDI Action Plan is resulting in meaningful change? Digging into your data can help you build and follow evidence in establishing a baseline, setting goals, and measuring progress. This resource outlines the basics of data collection to inform EDI Action Planning. ​

This resource on policy review aids colleagues in their efforts to dismantle structural injustices within their institutions/organizations and education abroad operations. It does so through guiding colleagues’ analysis and revision of current policies and their considerations for new policy development. ​​

7. EDI Action Plan Template (spreadsheet) 

The EDI Action Plan Template is an Excel spreadsheet providing over 100 suggested actions to include in your plan, which align with the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad. Designed to be customized by your institution/organization, the Template helps you to formulate a comprehensive plan that ties your actions to the Standards, as well as your EDI Statement and strategic plan, and helps you set timelines and assign tasks to responsible parties. ​
