The Basics and Beyond!

The Forum on Education Abroad's annual Institute on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is the premiere event for education abroad professionals focused on risk management issues.

In 2024, The Forum celebrated its 15th Institute, providing attendees with tools to strengthen institutional and organizational strategies for risk mitigation, incident prevention, emergency response, and overall well-being for education abroad participants.

The goals of the Institute were to:

1. Explore approaches and emerging trends from within as well as outside the field of education abroad; and
2. Further strengthen the overall safety and security of education abroad for the benefit of all participants.
   
3. Enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad by analyzing requirements and sharing examples of best practices;

Pre-conference Workshop

Pre-conferece workshop:  Mental Health Approaches to Health, Safety, and Well-Being  which identified current trends in student mental health at U.S. colleges and universities, and how mental health must be considered as part of a health, safety, and well-being strategy. Through case studies and resource sharing, attendees identified best practices for establishing positive approaches to supporting student mental health, before, during, and after education abroad.

Funding Available to Support Your Participation

The Sara’s Wish Foundation grants are available to help organizations and individuals meet their education abroad health and safety objectives. Applications for funding are available for the following Forum on Education Abroad events and professional development programs.

HEALTH & SAFETY INSTITUTE - REGISTRATION GRANT

• Number of Awards: 5 
• Request form opens corresponds with HSI registration opening. 
• Request form closes at the end of the early-bird registration period. 
• Priority given to Forum member institutions with limited professional development resources. 
• Selections made by a committee of Forum staff chaired by the Executive Director of Programs, Training and Services.

• ​Health and Safety Institute Attendance Grant. This annual institute is a mini conference focused exclusively on health and safety in education abroad. Senior risk managers and education abroad directors attend this 1.5-day conference to share best practices and develop new protocols to respond to the health and safety needs of students traveling abroad.

  Deadline to apply: June 1, 2024

​HEALTH AND SAFETY INSTITUTE - TRAVEL GRANT

• Up to $800 until award is exhausted at $2375
• Request form open corresponds with HSI registration opening
• Request form closes at the end of the early-bird registration period
• Priority given to Forum member Minority Serving Institutions (MSI)
• Award covers some, or all, of the proposed travel budget submitted
• Awards distributed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted

​Travel Grants for the Health and Safety Institute for individuals from under resourced organizations such as HBCUs, HSIs, MSIs, and Community Colleges. Up to $800 until funds are exhausted.
