This year, more than ever, The Forum on Education Abroad’s Annual Conference, with in-person programming in Toronto, Canada, from March 19-21, told a story of challenge, response, and innovation. More than 1,200 participants gathered in Toronto to participate in more than 75 sessions across three conference days. From the pre-conference events to the Closing Celebration Luncheon, Annual Conference attendees leaned into the difficult discussions shaping our field, not just to acknowledge them, but to actively engage and innovate beyond them.
Dear colleagues,
The Department of State has not released any information regarding the temporary 15-day pause that first began on February 12. The United States is hurting its own economic and national security interests by implementing this extraordinary freeze, which has yet to be lifted. If funding is not fully and immediately restored, businesses will find it harder to hire workers with global skills, the 3,500 Americans who are currently abroad on scholarships will be less safe, and the international education community’s ability to implement programs in the future will be irreparably harmed. Congress must follow through on the funding commitments they made if they want to preserve the future of America’s workforce and support student success. On Wednesday, March 11, The Forum on Education Abroad released its tenth State of the Field survey, reflecting a pivotal moment for the field. After a comprehensive review and revision process, the 2024 survey was streamlined to be more relevant to today’s evolving landscape and more inclusive of institutions and organizations worldwide. These enhancements resulted in double the participation of the 2022 survey and increased engagement from institutions outside North America.
