First Generation and Education Abroad: Strategy, Support, and Asset Based Pedagogy First generation college students are defined as individuals whose parents or guardians did not attend or complete a college degree. These students are often highly resilient and adaptable, skills well suited to successful education abroad experiences. First generation students also benefit greatly from high impact educational practices such as education abroad, yet they are often underrepresented in education abroad programming. This workshop will share resources and strategies to create more inclusive policies and program structures to improve first generation college student access to education abroad, using the Standards of Good Practice in Education Abroad as a foundation. Who Should Attend This Workshop? International educators, education abroad advisors and recruiters, faculty advisors, academic advisors, diversity equity and inclusion professionals, financial aid advisors, student life professionals. Site visits provide an opportunity to experience Career-Integrated Global Learning in action, connect with local colleagues, and better understand the regional context. Join for onsite briefings with employers and associations discussing local industry and global innovation. Areas of exploration include entrepreneurship, sustainability, hospitality, health care, and technology. This post-conference event will investigate trends in workforce development, best practices in applied learning, and lessons from the region. Transportation will be included, and space is limited. Who Should Attend This Workshop? Program administrators, faculty, placement coordinators, resident directors, and anyone curious about local industry and global innovation will benefit from participating in these site visits. How You’ll Benefit During these site visits, you will discover local innovation, explore regional industry, consider emerging global trends, and network among site visit participants.
