Current Position Opening at the Forum
The Forum on Education Abroad is pleased to announce that it has been chosen by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) as one of thirteen organizations to host a Public Fellow. The Fellow will serve in a two-year position that is fully funded by ACLS and will be based in the Forum’s offices in Carlisle, PA.
The Fellow will serve as Associate Director and be involved in developing resources in the areas of education abroad pedagogy and curriculum, and assist with the planning of related workshops and Standards of Good Practice Institutes. Brian Whalen is the President and CEO of the Forum on Education Abroad, a global membership association of over 500 institutional members, and the only organization whose exclusive purpose is to serve the field of U.S. education abroad. He was until recently also Associate Provost, Associate Professor of International Studies and Executive Director of the Office of Global Education at Dickinson College. A well-known international educator, Brian has written and spoken extensively on a wide range of international education topics and has served on a number of boards of international education organizations. For five years he was an on-site resident director of education abroad programs in Italy. Brian is the founding editor of Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, founded in 1994 as the first academic journal devoted to education abroad, and he continues to serve as its editor and publisher. Brian holds B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology.
Natalie Mello

Natalie A. Mello is the Executive Director for Member Services and Training. She oversees a range of initiatives that include programs to train members in the Standards of Good Practice though the expansion of workshops, Standards Institutes, Fireside Dialogues, and other programs. Natalie joined the Forum in 2011 after serving as Director of Global Operations in the Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She also served as an onsite advisor for WPI students as they completed degree-required projects in Venice, Italy; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Washington, DC. She has been involved with national education abroad organizations for many years, particularly in the area of risk management, and has become recognized as developing a model for responsible risk management for off-campus experiences. Natalie previously served as the Chair of the Advisory Council for The Forum on Education Abroad, and chaired the Forum’s 2008 Annual Conference as well as co-chaired its first stand-alone Standards of Good Practice Institute in 2011. She contributed to the 2005 edition on NAFSA’s Guide to Education Abroad for Advisers and Administrators. She has also published and presented in the areas of engineering education, education abroad and educational outcomes assessment. Natalie is a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corp, was a mentor in the NAFSA Academy and sits on the Interassociational Task Force on Health and Safety in Study Abroad. She holds a B.A. in Art from Connecticut College, a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and a Master of Liberal Arts from Clark University.
Annmarie Marlin Whalen

Annmarie Marlin Whalen serves as Executive Director for Programs with responsibility for managing the full complement of Forum projects and activities, including the Quality Improvement Program (QUIP). In this role, she is evaluated by the Provost of Dickinson College. Annmarie has worked in higher education for over 25 years in a variety of roles. She taught art history in Rome, Italy and served as assistant director of the University of Dallas Rome Campus. After returning from Italy, she worked as Assistant to the Director and Editorial Assistant at the Institute for the Classical Tradition at Boston University, and later as Assistant to the President of the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College. Since 2001, Annmarie has been Managing Editor of Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad. She managed Dickinson College's Title VI Grant on the Assessment of Education Abroad Learning Outcomes. Annmarie holds a BA in philosophy from the University of Dallas and studied abroad in Rome. She completed course work for her MA in art history with a focus on the Paduan frescoes of Giotto. She is fluent in Italian, conversant in French, and has German reading proficiency.
Heather Harris

Heather Harris is the Assistant Director of the Forum on Education Abroad. She assists with the development, coordination and management of Forum member services and benefits such as web resources, publications, surveys and reports, workshops, webinars and conferences, and research and quality improvement programs. She joined the Forum in 2010, after completing her MA in Intercultural Relations at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Heather also holds a BA in Spanish and Anthropology from the University of Florida in Gainesville. In addition to independent travels, she studied abroad for a semester in Toledo, Spain, through Arcadia University, and taught English for one year in Concepción, Chile, with WorldTeach. Heather has also served as a Latin America Programs Assistant at WorldTeach, interned at the Wellesley College Office of International Studies and the Harvard International Office, and presented at a regional NAFSA conference.
Jen Brown

Jen Brown serves as the Associate Director for Conference and Events with responsibility for planning and managing the annual conference, as well as managing Board and Council meetings, committee meetings, workshops and all Forum events throughout the year. Jen previously served as the executive assistant for the Central Pennsylvania Consortium, where she planned and managed collaborative events and conferences for faculty, administrators, students and staff at Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg Colleges. Jen has eight years of combined experience in student development and academic affairs in higher education – she was the Director of Student Life at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, and worked in various positions in the Center for Values and Service, the Women's Center and the Office of Academic Affairs and Diversity at Loyola College in Maryland. Jen has been a trained facilitator for the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), an international non-profit organization dedicated to leadership development, prejudice reduction and conflict resolution since 1998. She also completed one year of service for AmeriCorps, serving as a Literacy Coordinator, in Western MD. Jen earned her B.S. in Speech/Language Pathology from Loyola College.
Anne Miller

Annie Miller is the Forum's Business Manager, responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of the Forum. Annie has worked with the Forum since 2006, having already served in administrative positions in non-profit organizations. Annie received a BA from SUNY Potsdam and an MBA from the Katz School at the University of Pittsburgh.
