Interrogating the Educational Role of Off-Campus Study in the Liberal Arts

This workshop is an exercise in thinking reflectively about broad issues of educational mission and practice. Participants will be asked to read a variety of articles before the workshop then reflect on issues of educational philosophy that should inform our work at liberal arts institutions and divisions of universities. The format will be highly interactive, including some lecture but with an emphasis on small and large group discussion.

In this workshop, group discussion leaders will each outline a specific theoretical construct and discuss the links between the theory and its applications. The morning and afternoon sessions will each have two sections dealing with a different topic:
Morning Sessions:
Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Bennett)

The Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (Hammer)
What Will We Do Once the U- and W-Curves of Adjustment are Retired? (Labrack/Berardo)
Participants can choose one section in each session. Within smaller group settings, all participants will have the opportunity for detailed discussion and for sharing information and insights from their own experience. Registration will be limited; if you have specific topic preferences, it is important to register early to secure a place in the sessions of your choice.

Morning Workshops:
Developing Emergency Protocols for Education Abroad

The workshop will include an overview of international risk management, the hazard landscape, how to create protocols, resources, crisis management, and who else to collaborate with on your campus. A highly participatory training format will consist of presentations interspersed with case studies, exercises and scenarios.
The Millennial Generation: Strategies for Education Abroad Programming

This workshop starts with discussion of the social, cultural, and political factors that help to shape this Millennial Generation and the specific demographic factors that identify them. Then presenters will utilize case studies, break-out groups, and open discussions to address program development and management in relation to the Millennials. Strategies for positively fostering student learning when working with this generation of students will be discussed.

Legal Issues and Case Studies in Education Abroad

The workshop will cover a variety of legal issues that inform all aspects of education abroad, including the following topics: lawful business practices and financial arrangements with study abroad providers; challenging destinations; contracts with partner institutions; short-term international trips and programs; preparing faculty and students; and employment arrangements abroad.
The Client/Student Balance: Evaluating the Education Abroad Experience

In this workshop, participants will look closely at the types of questions students are typically asked in outcomes assessment and determine the goals and values the questions sustain and reveal. In roundtable discussions, participants will determine the ideal learning experience offered by the central components of study abroad programs (academic study, housing, orientation, cultural integration activities, security, and administrative services). Then, selecting from a variety of question formats and strategies, participants will conceive and elaborate model questions and questionnaires to elicit meaningful, responsible, and clearly focused accounts of the student’s experience within the context of identifiable educational goals.
QUIP Peer Reviewer Training Workshop
The workshop is a prerequisite for becoming a QUIP Peer Reviewer. It will focus on the concept of quality improvement for education abroad, the implementation of the Forum’s Standards of Good Practice, and the role and responsibilities of the QUIP Peer Reviewer. The workshop will detail the processes of the QUIP reviews, including the Site Visit and writing the Peer Review Report. Participants will analyze actual case studies in dialogue groups, then present their analysis for group discussion.
